Edmonton NAIT students find less jobs

Walking around a career fair Tuesday, NAIT students Stephanie MacKinnon and Ashli Wright felt more concerned than excited about finding work.

"There's not that many jobs. We're pretty worried," MacKinnon, 23, a second-year architectural technology student, said at the annual NAIT career fair.

The students' worries mesh with the college's work placement figures.

Last year, 87% of NAIT students secured jobs after graduation, down from 94.7% in 2008.

This year 83 employers had booths at the event, compared to 115 outfits in 2009, said NAIT spokeswoman Raquel Maurier.

With fewer employers hiring and a large pool of job hunters to choose from, a senior recruiter for oil and gas company Nexen in Fort McMurray says the result is actually a better workforce.

"(The job scene) is not what it was two years ago. I have interviewed people coming in who are chewing gum and have no discipline whatsoever," said Kirk White.

More people are beginning to secure work in the province, according to Statistics Canada.

Alberta's unemployment rate dropped to 6.7% in December, from 7.4% the previous month.
