NDP calls for more job creation measures in federal budget

The NDP says the Harper government has to come up with something more than a "stay the course" federal budget early next month.

Party leader Jack Layton says holding firm on government spending won't help unemployed people get back to work. He's urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to focus more attention on creating jobs, rather than staring down the federal deficit.

He wants the Conservatives to shelve two further planned corporate tax cuts and to further extend employment insurance benefits.

Layton also says the government needs to invest more in "green" technologies.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is to unveil his latest budget on March 4.
