Statistics Canada: Public sector jobs growth declines

Public sector jobs as a proportion of total employment in Canada fell for the first time in two years in the first quarter as private companies stepped up hiring, government figures showed.

The number of people employed in the public sector declined 0.1 percentage points to 20.5% of the total, Statistics Canada said. Private sector jobs increased by 0.7%, it said.

Canada added the most jobs on record in April, with 109,000 new positions. The unemployment rate edged down 0.1 percentage points to 8.1%.

Federal general government employment edged up 0.2% in the first quarter of 2010 compared with the fourth quarter of 2009, while employment in the provincial and territorial general government has remained unchanged since the first quarter of 2009 at 359,000 employees, it said.

Employment in educational bodies rose 1.3%, mainly due to a gain of 13,000 employees in universities, it said.

The public sector includes three levels of government, universities and colleges, health and social service institutions and all economic bodies controlled by government. (Source: Toronto Sun)
