General Motors of Canada Limited: 700 Jobs Added as Second Shift Begins at Oshawa Assembly Plant

The Oshawa Assembly Plant today added 700 employees to support a second shift on the Flexible Manufacturing Line in preparation for the 2011 launch of the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible and the all-new Buick Regal. These much anticipated models will be built along-side the hot-selling Chevrolet Camaro Coupe. Start of production for the Camaro Convertible is slated for January, while the Buick Regal will ramp up production in early spring.

"With three new vehicle launches underway and the addition of two-new shifts, the Oshawa Assembly Plant has become a model for flexibility," said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of General Motors of Canada. "Through a disciplined approach and a relentless focus on execution, the Oshawa team has worked efficiently to implement these significant initiatives."

This new shift for Oshawa's Flex Line comes just weeks after the addition of a third shift on the Consolidated Line to support increased production for the Chevrolet Equinox, one of North America's fastest-selling vehicles. The two new shifts have secured over 1300 jobs for Oshawa, recalling all production workers along with the hiring of over 300 new employees.

The Chevrolet Camaro, just named the "hottest car" at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, will add even more sizzle with the introduction of the 2011 Camaro convertible. On sale in February, the all-new convertible delivers uncompromising, coupe-like driving dynamics thanks to an enhanced body structure, taking open-air driving to new levels of refinement.

Recently awarded AJAC's Best New Family Car over $30,000, the all-new 2011 Buick Regal is a modern performance sedan to rival the best premium midsize sport sedans. Developed by the same German engineering team that created the Opel Insignia, 2009 European Car of the Year, Regal brings all of Insignia's award-winning design, technology and European-inspired performance capabilities to the Canadian market.
