TELUS hiring over 200 positions in Edmonton to support Optik TV growth

Edmonton, AB – TELUS is hiring over 200 new customer service agents in Edmonton by the end of this year to support the growing demand for its all digital Optik TV offering.

Once the current hiring campaign is complete, the new recruits will join more than 3,000 TELUS team members who already call Edmonton and surrounding area home.

“Optik TV is a game-changer – the customer response has been terrific and, as a result, we're hiring in Edmonton,” said Joanne Beaton, vice-president, Customer Service. “Not only does Optik TV give Albertans a better choice about where to get their TV service, but it offers un-matched flexibility and some of the best features available anywhere in the world today. PVR Anywhere, for example, enables customers to record a show, or an entire series, on any television in their home and watch it on any other connected television. Another cool feature, Remote Record, allows customers to manage their PVR recordings from any internet-connected computer, iPhone or select Blackberries.”

As of June 30, TELUS had 228,000 TV customers, doubling its customer base over the previous year.

Edmonton is also the home of TELUS' Chief Technology Office. Ibrahim Gedeon, TELUS' chief technology officer, and his team of engineers and technicians developed the technology behind the industry leading Optik TV service right here in Edmonton. In the past two years alone, TELUS has invested $1.4 billion in Alberta to bring the benefits of advanced broadband wireless and wireline networks and applications to the province's citizens at home, at work and on the go. Since 2000, TELUS has made more than $21 billion in operating and capital investments in Alberta.

“We are extremely pleased that TELUS has chosen Edmonton as the hub for its new Optik TV services. And now, 200 Optik TV care agents have been added to the 3,000 current TELUS staff in Edmonton,” said Martin Salloum, president and CEO, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. “In addition Edmonton is home to an Optik TV Technology Centre of world class technologists producing leading edge TV products. This is not only a huge boost to the overall economic activity in this City but also adds significant profile to Edmonton's high technology reputation.”

Optik TV, powered by Microsoft Mediaroom, offers never before seen functionality, features, and more than 480 channels, including over 80 in High Definition (HD). Optik TV features the best PVR experience with PVR Anywhere, only from TELUS. Now one PVR acts as a server for your entire home so you can watch and record your shows on any TV in your home, record up to three shows at once, or pause a program in one room and pick it up from the same spot in another room. Optik TV also offers Picture-in-Picture browsing; improved search capability enabling you to search for shows and movies by actors, directors, show titles or sporting events for immediate viewing or recording in the future; onscreen Call Display; HD Video On Demand; and HD Pay Per View, enabling you to order movies and live events from the comfort of your couch.

Recently, TELUS customers became amongst the first in the world to be able to use their Xbox 360 as a digital set top box for Optik TV.

TELUS also offers TELUS Satellite TV service which complements TELUS' Optik TV, which expands the availability of TELUS home bundles, including TELUS TV, home phone and High Speed Internet to more than 90 per cent of households across Alberta.
